May: But they're purple. I prefer a brown set.
Salesman: If you insist, I can show you the brown sets. I'll have to warn you that they're very ordinary, though.
May: Well, I'm not so sure. Most of my make-up is brown.
Salesman: Why don't you wear purple eye shadow for a change? We also have lipstick to go with it.
May: Can I try it?
Salesman: Sure. Are you wearing any make-up?
May: No.
Salesman: Have a seat, please. (He paints on eye shadow for May) Now, Here is the mirror. How do you like it?
May: Not bad. Actually, it makes me look younger. I like it.

1. 对话中May来到商场的化妆品柜台买化妆品。cosmetics，是化妆品的总称，尤其是用在脸上的产品，通常都是复数形式。May想看看口红和眼影。她说：I'd like to look at lipstick and eye shadow. 当然也可以说I'd like to have a look at lipstick and eye shadow.
2. 营业员问她What color set do you prefer? 你想要什么色系的口红的眼影呢？大家知道，彩妆分为冷色系，暖色系和中性色系，要根据个人的肤色和气质来选择，所以营业员才会这么问。color set就表示色系。May比较喜欢棕色色系。这时营业员开始推销新产品了，We have a beautiful selection of eye shadows this fall. 今年秋冬季节我们的眼影产品颜色都很漂亮。他向May推荐的是一款紫色的眼影，但是May还是比较喜欢棕色的眼影。
3. 营业员说可以给May看棕色系的眼影，但是这些产品很一般。May就开始动摇了自己的想法，其实她对自己该选用什么色系也没有什么把握，Well, I'm not so sure. Most of my make-up is brown. 选择棕色也是因为她的化妆品大部分都是棕色的。make-up，专指彩妆，而不是护肤品。化妆，就是wear make-up，比如：She never wears make-up.她从来不化妆

Sam: OK, is that why all these bizarre gadgets are laid out on the table?
Jenny: Yep. Wanna watch?
Sam: Yeah. Girl's stuff is absolutely fascinating, Jenny. No, thanks. I'll stick to guy' stuff.
Jenny: After you see what it does to my face, you'l be sorry you didn' watch.
Sam: What do you mean?
Jenny: You'e been breaking out lately. And you'e got a date tomorrow night.
Sam: I know...a right. I'l watch. And then I'll try it.
Jenny: We'll start with the handheld massaging facial cleanser. It's a soft brush that rotates.
Sam: Why do you need a batter-operated cleaner? That's so lazy!
Jenny: It feels better and works better than using my hands.
Sam: OK, whatever.
Jenny: See how it cleanses so thoroughly? And it works up lots of suds.
Sam: I see. Are you done now? It's my turn.
Jenny: Go ahead. Better yet, allow me. Just let me rinse my face off.
Sam; I'm ready! [Jenny uses the cleanser on his face] Wow! This feels great! I'm melting!
Jenny: Don't get too comfortable. This is only the first step!

2. Sam感到很奇怪，问Jenny，Who's DIY? What does he want with your face? DIY是谁？他打算把你的脸怎么样？这里的What does someone want with something? 就表示“某人要对某物做什么？”，比如：What do you want with my bag? 你拿我 的包干什么？如果把with something换成with someone，就表示“要对某人怎么样”，例如：---Do you know where Christy is? ---What do you want with her? --- 你知道Christy在哪吗？---你找她干嘛？还有就是如果要质问人“你要干嘛？”，就可以用What do you want?
3. Jenny给Sam解释了DIY的意思，Sam问...is that why all these bizarre gadgets are laid out on the table? 那就是这些怪模怪样的机器摊了一桌子的原因？bizarre表示“怪异的”，gadget是指“设计精巧的机器或工具”。所以这里Sam用bizarre来形容gadget。lay out这个词组表示“布置，展示”。例如：Please lay out all the clothes you want to take on holiday.请把你想带去度假的衣服摊开来看看。

7. Jenny告诉了Sam不看会后悔的原因，You've been breaking out lately. And you've got a date tomorrow night. 你最近都在长痘痘，而且你明天晚上还要约会。break out，这里表示“长青春痘”。还可以表示“爆发，突发”，例如：Fire broke out in the building. 那栋大楼突然发生了火灾。She broke out in curses in her dream. 她在梦中大声叫骂起来。
8. date, 意思是“约会，尤其是跟异性约会”，可以说have a date or get a date with someone。date还可以指异性的约会对象，例如：My date is meeting me at seven.我的对象跟我约好7点钟见面。Sam还是禁不起诱惑，决定要试试Jenny的面部护理工具。

11. Jenny告诉Sam，It feels better and works better than using my hands. 它用起来感觉和效果都比用手好。Sam不以为然，说whatever，就是“随便你”的意思，在口语中也很常用。Jenny演示给Sam看，See how it cleanses so thoroughly? And it works up lots of suds. 看到它清洁的有多彻底了吧，而且起了好多泡泡。work up，表示“激起，制造出”，suds是肥皂泡沫。
12. Sam已经迫不及待了，Are you done now? It's my turn. 你好了吗？该我了。Something is done表示“已经好了，已经完成了”。Jenny鼓励Sam说，Go ahead. 你来做吧。但是Jenny考虑到Sam是第一次使用这种产品，就决定帮Sam来做，她说Better yet, allow me. 不如这样，让我来帮你。这是一个固定的用法，表示“不如让我来吧”，Just let me rinse my face off. 先让我把脸洗了。rinse off，用水洗掉。rinse表示“漂洗”，例如：I rinsed the clothes I had washed. 我把洗过的衣服投了一下。

My face feels squeaky-clean! So, what magic trick are you going to perform on me now?
Jenny: The rest is self-serve, Sam. We're going to steam our faces first.
Sam: What am I, a lobster? Why would I want to steam my face?
Jenny: Because the steam and heat opens up your pores.
Sam: My pores are big enough already.
Jenny: We can't clean them deeply unless we open them up.
Sam: But that steam machine looks scary.
Jenny: Come here! I'll make a man out of you somehow...
Sam: OK...[sitting in front of the machine] the steam's starting to come out now.
Jenny: So breathe it in and relax.
Sam: How can you breathe in this thick steam?
Jenny: Calm down, Sam.
Sam: I'm getting hot, Jenny! It's gonna cook my face!
Jenny: It's just warm. Now sit still!
Sam: Am I done yet? I'm soaking!
Jenny: Yes, yes. Now look at your pores. They're wide open.
Sam: Oh, my god! They're huge. And they're nasty!
Jenny: So now we're going to suck the dirt right out!
Sam: Gee, Jennny...I can hardly wait...
讲解：
1. 做好脸部清洁之后，就要开始用蒸汽蒸脸，目的就是让毛孔扩大，来清除里面的污垢。现在Sam觉得自己的脸非常干净，他说My face feels squeaky-clean! 我的脸感觉非常的干净，squeaky-clean在口语当中表示“非常干净的，干净的刮得出声音的”，就像盘子洗干净之后用手使劲摩擦发出的那种声音。
2. 皮肤很干净了，下一步该做什么了呢？what magic trick are you going to perform on me now? perform magic trick on someone，在某人身上变魔术，施魔法。但是这个表达方式跟魔术没有什么必然的联系，倒是跟经常跟神奇的效果联系在一起。例如：---Go ahead! Perform your magic! ---OK, but don't get upset if I cut your hair too short! ---快施展你的神技！---好吧，如果我把你的头发剪的太短，你可别生气！
3. 下一步是要自己做的，就是蒸脸，steam face，steam可以做动词，表示“蒸，蒸发”，例如：The hot water was steaming. 热水在冒热气。steam the meat/fish 蒸肉或蒸鱼。self-serve，表示“自助的，自理的”。Sam觉得很奇怪，自己又不是龙虾，为什么要蒸一下呢？
4. Jenny解释说，因为蒸汽和热气能舒张你的毛孔，Because the steam and heat opens up your pores. open up，使某物打开，张开，在口语当中还可以表示“畅谈，打开话匣子”，例如：After a few drinks, he began to open up a bit.几杯酒下肚，他的话就多起来了。
5. Sam说他的毛孔已经够大了，但是如果毛孔不完全张开的话就没有办法做深层的清洁。Sam对着蒸脸气还有些害怕，Jenny鼓励他说，Come here! I'll make a man out of you somehow...过来！我会想办法让你变成一个男子汉...make a man out of someone，让某人成为男子汉，给某人勇气，这句话一般只对男生说，例如：---Serving in the army will make a man out of you. Then I think I'll just stay a boy forever.当兵
能让你成为男子汉。那我还是永远当小男孩好了。
6.Jenny让Sam做深呼吸，同时放松，但是Sam在这么浓重的蒸汽中根本无法呼吸。breathe it in，表示“把蒸汽吸入”，thick steam，很多的蒸汽。Jenny告诉Sam要冷静，就是“calm down”。Sam觉得越来越热，脸都要被蒸熟了，I'm getting hot, Jenny! It's gonna cook my face! Jenny安慰他说只是温温的而已，没有他说的那么恐怖。并且让Sam坐好。sit still，表示“坐好，坐着不动”。Sam不耐烦了，问Jenny , Am I done yet? I'm soaking! 好了没有啊？我浑身都湿透了，soak表示“浸透，湿透”，例如：Our clothes were soaking. 我们的衣服都湿透了。
7. 终于做完了蒸脸，Sam的毛孔现在张的很大了，The pore are wide open. wide open，表示“门户大开”。里面的污垢全出现了，下一步就是把脏东西都吸出来，suck the dirt right out。Gee，这里是一个感叹词，用来表示惊奇、赞赏等等，例如： Gee, I like your new shirt! 嘿，我真喜欢你的新衬衫！

Jenny: Yes, but very gently. And now I use it on my forehead and chin.
Sam: Hey! You're right! Your blackheads are gone! Your skin is spotless!
Jenny: So, you give it a try!
Sam: OK. Do I just turn it on and ...
Jenny: Yes, but you have to push harder.
Sam: It's not sticking...oh! Now it is.
Jenny: Your blackheads are so deep, it's gonna take some serious sucking action...

2. Sam觉得这个东西挺吓人的，就不想试了，I think I'll pass. 表示“我还是不参加好了”。在打牌的时候，轮到你出牌，但是你不想出，就可以说“跳过”，也就是pass。那么当有人提议一起去做某事，在你听来有点恐怖或者匪夷所思，就可以说这句话拒绝，表示“这次不行，或许下次吧”，例如：---How about a jog in the rain? ---I think I'll pass. 来个雨中慢跑如何？我还是不参加好了。I'll pass. 还可以用来拒绝别人分派的东西，跟No, thanks差不多，例如：---Another piece of cake?--- I think I'll pass, I've had enough.---再吃块蛋糕吧。---还是不吃了，我已经吃饱了。

里的baby有点贬义，表示“令人头疼的小东西”。Jenny说I'd be careful if I were you.我要是你的话就会小心一点。这里建议大家把I'd be...if I were you这个句式背熟，直接拿出来用就可以了。
8. 但是Sam没有听Jenny的劝告，用力过猛，鼻子都变红了，Your nose is really red, Rudolph! Rudolph是圣诞老人的驯鹿，鼻子又红又亮，所以这里Jenny用Rudolph 来形容Sam. 但是San却不在意，I can take a little pain. 这点痛我受得了。take pain，忍受疼痛或痛苦。
9. Jenny警告他，你会弄伤皮肤的，但是Sam却认为这样也许会把黑头清理的一干二净。I might as well clean it spick-and-span! spick-and-span，表示“非常干净清洁的”。
